The Kuba pillow is made from traditional woven long strips of hand loomed Kuba cloth that is woven from raffia. Colors are produced with indigo, natural oils and vegetable dye. Bold, graphic and richly textured, each pillow is a one of a kind expression of the preserved artistic heritage of the Kuba people of Congo.
Kuba cloth textiles are used in rituals and ceremonies in the Democratic Republic of Congo. Each piece is between 3m to 5m long and are traditionally used as a dance skirt for men and women. Each cloth is individually hand woven so no 2 pieces are the same. The making of the Kuba cloth is a very time consuming process. Kuba men gather the leaves of the raffia tree and then dye them by using mud and substances from the camwood tree. The men rub the raffia fibers in their hands to soften and make it easier for weaving. Each piece sold is a handmade, authentic Kuba piece. Comes with a black cotton backing and a zipper.
