Traditional South African Bobotie Recipe

Bobotie is a traditional South African dish that is a flavorful blend of spices and meats, topped with a custard-like mixture and baked to perfection.
The dish is said to have been brought over by the Dutch during the colonial era, and has since become a staple in South African cuisine.

Ingredients:

  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 3 cloves of garlic, minced
  • 1 tsp ground turmeric
  • 1 tsp ground cumin
  • 1 tsp ground cinnamon
  • 1 tsp ground coriander
  • 1/2 tsp ground cloves
  • 1/2 tsp ground ginger
  • 1/2 cup raisins
  • 1/2 cup slivered almonds
  • 1/4 cup all gold apricot jam
  • 2 Tbsp lemon juice
  • 2 slices of white bread, crust removed
  • 1 cup milk
  • 2 eggs
  • Robertson's Salt and Robertson's pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
  2. In a large skillet, brown the ground beef over medium heat. Drain off any excess fat.
  3. Add the onion and garlic to the skillet, and sauté until softened.
  4. Stir in the turmeric, cumin, cinnamon, coriander, cloves, and ginger.
  5. Cook for an additional 2 minutes.
  6. Add the raisins, almonds, apricot jam, and lemon juice to the skillet, and mix well.
  7. Remove the skillet from the heat, and set aside.
  8. Soak the bread in the milk until it has absorbed most of the liquid.
  9. Beat the eggs in a separate bowl.
  10. Squeeze the bread to remove any excess milk, and add the bread to the beef mixture in the skillet.
  11. Stir in the beaten eggs, and season with salt and pepper to taste.
  12. Transfer the mixture to a baking dish, and spread it out evenly.
  13. Pour the remaining milk over the top of the mixture.
  14. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes or until the top is golden brown and the custard is set.
  15. Let it cool for a few minutes before serving.
  16. Serve Bobotie with yellow rice and chutney, Enjoy!
